Barkarby station

During the construction of Barkarby station, Q-gruppen commissioned Assemblin to implement a complete installation solution including electricity, telecommunications, security, building automation, and monitoring control.

Client
  • Q-gruppen/Trafikverket

The project included installations in an entirely new station building of approximately 4,000 square meters, new platforms, as well as connections to commuter trains, regional trains, buses, and the forthcoming metro.

From gravel pit to completed station

The project began at the turn of the year 2022/2023, and at that time, there was only a gravel pit next to the existing regional and long-distance railway tracks and platforms. Five of Assemblin’s units (electrical, telecom, security, building automation, and monitoring control) worked in an integrated way to create a reliable and future-proof station that connects the Stockholm region with Mälardalen. The project required a strong focus on safety, as existing rail traffic remained operational throughout the entire construction period. This placed high demands on planning, coordination, and safety procedures, since the existing station remained in operation at all times, except during scheduled train stops when work near the tracks was carried out. Everyone involved in the project completed training from the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) on how to work safely near railway traffic.

- The collaboration with Assemblin has worked extremely well throughout the entire project. Barkarby station is a complex assignment with high demands on safety, planning, and technical coordination – and Assemblin has been a reliable and solution‑oriented partner in all of this. Their broad expertise and ability to integrate the many technical disciplines have been crucial to our ability to deliver a modern and operationally reliable station. We are proud of the result and of the professional cooperation we have had along the way, says Anders Hallgren, Project Manager, Q‑gruppen i Stockholm AB.

A comprehensive multiproject with an integrated technical delivery

Assemblin’s assignment covered the entire station’s technical infrastructure and was executed as a multiproject across five technical disciplines. The delivery included the installation of power supply systems with switchgear, main distribution boards, and lighting, as well as power feeds for the station’s technical systems such as elevators, escalators, heating, and ventilation. In parallel, fiber and data networks were installed, along with information systems and public address systems for passenger information.

An important part of the work involved separating the railway’s electrical system from the building’s electrical installations, which required dedicated transformer solutions and extensive handling of equipotential bonding.

The assignment also included security systems such as access control, CCTV surveillance, and fire and evacuation alarms. Control and monitoring systems for lighting, heating, and ventilation were installed and integrated so that the entire facility can be monitored and managed via Trafikverket’s and SL’s central control rooms, with clear authorization management between the parties.

- Here we have done an excellent job developing a solution that gives the client overarching monitoring and control interfaces that connect all alarms and functions in the station. These are integrated with the main control centers at Trafikverket and SL to ensure real‑time information sharing, says Kåre Persson, Project Manager at Assemblin.

Focus on operational reliability and coordination

A central part of the project was ensuring high operational reliability. The railway’s electrical system and the building’s electrical installations were completely separated in accordance with all applicable safety requirements. The station was equipped with backup power consisting of UPS solutions and redundant functions.

- This project shows how crucial the collaboration between different technical disciplines is in creating a safe and well‑functioning station environment. Having all the necessary expertise within Assemblin has made it possible to coordinate the delivery despite the high level of complexity, says Kåre Persson.

Barkarby station will become an important transport hub, enabling smooth transfers between the metro, buses, commuter trains, regional trains, and long‑distance trains. Approximately 8,500 passengers per hour are expected to pass through the station during peak hours.

The project was approved at the final inspection in December 2025. Work began at the turn of the year 2022/23, and the station is scheduled to open to the public in April 2026.
